"Those green eyes bore down on me without mercy. The fact that he was strikingly handsome...only added insult to injury."
Tyler Phoenix was one of the top spring training baseball prospects pegged as a favorite to be rookie of the year. Then weeks of lackluster performance culminated in humiliation from three strikeouts in a row in a single game. After the game, he got a tap on the shoulder from the manager and the word that he was cut from the roster and being sent back down to the minors.
Luke Meyers was the pitcher who delivered the strikeouts. Staring down Tyler at the plate with his tall, lanky body, and piercing green eyes, he brought the young prospect to his knees, but it was all in a day's work for a pitcher in spring training's Grapefruit League.
Now it's a year later, and Tyler and Luke are thrown together in an airport hotel as refuge from a February blizzard shutting down flights to Florida out of New York City. Luke tries to break down the walls of animosity while Tyler clings tight to his still seething anger. The memories of one sizzling hot night in bed were meant to be left in New York, forgotten by the time the plane touched down on a runway in Orlando. The agreement to bury the secret worked perfectly until a surprise trade brought them back together on the same team.
Making the Cut is a 45,000 word standalone enemies to lovers romance. There are steamy scenes, no cliffhangers, and a happily ever after ending.
Making the Cut edition by Declan Rhodes Romance eBooks
'Making the Cut' is an enjoyable read. There is enough romance and angst to keep the reader engaged through to the end. Sports m/m romance is my favourite genre and I like baseball themed stories in particular. While this story was nowhere near the best in the category I found the story based around spring training interesting (particularly as spring training is in progress at present). My three star rating is based on the following: the writing was decent and editing okay; the main characters are likeable; and the story interesting and engaging. An enjoyable and recommended read.Product details

Making the Cut edition by Declan Rhodes Romance eBooks Reviews
This was a great Read that is enjoyable all around. Declan Rhodes has brought yet another beautiful novel. Two baseball players are brought together after a rocky meeting a year ago. Tyler was vying to make it to the majors, but his efforts in spring training fell short especially when he struck out under Luke, a new pitcher in the majors. Now he comes back to prove himself. On the way he gets caught in a blizzard at the New York airport. He checks in to a hotel and finds Luke there. Anger and bad feelings causes Tyler to put up a wall between them, but booze and attraction bring them to a scorching night of passion. Tyler wants to put that night behind him, but he gets traded to the team that Luke is on. It doesn't take them long to figure out there is something between them. Something that neither wants to ignore. It only takes 6 weeks for their lives to change both professionally and personally. I loved these two characters from the start. Another great feel good story with a HEA.❤️
Luke and Tyler have a history that Tyler would love to forget. He blames Luke for getting him cut during spring training and sent down to the minors. But when they’re both stuck at an airport on their way to spring training the following year, Luke and Tyler can’t deny the chemistry there. Even though the chemistry was unforgettable, Tyler wishes he could forget it. Tyler knows they’ll never spend time together unless they face each other on the field, but that all changes when Tyler is traded to Luke’s team. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it takes a while for Luke to break down Tyler’s defenses to show him that they are right for each other. But as their chemistry heats up. One of them is in danger of being cut and sent down to the minors away from the other. Can they work through it together and help each other out? Or will the stress be too much?
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of the book.
Spoiler the only thing I have to say is that I wasn’t sure what was going on with Luke at the end. He was all into baseball and then it seemed like he just gave up after he was moved down to the minors. I didn’t get the impression from him that he didn’t like what he was doing and that he would give up his life of baseball as soon as he hit a speed bump.
I thought this book showed well the stress that comes from trying to perform in major league sports. However, I was a little creeped out by Luke at first. There might not be any crying in baseball, but there sure was some stalker-like behavior! If you know a guy despises you, why wouldn't you just leave him alone? There also was some dubious consent. If a guy is drunk, can he really consent to sex? As for Tyler, it seemed odd to me that a professional athlete would be so resentful about another player doing his job, even if it meant he got sent back to the minors. Despite those questions, this was a hopeful, albeit angsty, story about evaluating what you want out of life, fighting for what you want, and working together to find love. I was surprised by the ending, and I thought it left some loose ends. The reader doesn't know for sure whether Luke and Tyler will find their HEA. We are just provided a possibility and left to write our own ending. I liked this story as a light, quick read, but I didn't feel any real attachment to the characters.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Sweet and uncomplicated with very little angst and good baseball but not as good as his other baseball books.
3 stars
It was just ok for me, I finished it because I love baseball books but it wasn't my favourite. I didn't feel the connection between the two MCs and other than physical attraction, I'm not really sure what kept them together
Quick, fun read about professional baseball players...with plenty of Heat.
I enjoy Declan's style, and am looking forward to starting his Pitchers and Catchers series
Declan Rhodes is growing as a M/M romance writer, and Making the Cut clearly shows that growth. In this novel we get to meet Tyler and Luke, both baseball players, but both coming into the game from different directions. Rhodes has truly captured the joy and anguish of baseball players trying to either make or stay on a team's 40 man roster, and his mixture of sex and baseball makes for a very enjoyable read. I was very intrigued by the turn of leadership roles between Tyler and Luke, along with their growing romance. This is a very heartwarming book that is the perfect read before opening day, which is 3 April this year.
